چکیده
Abstract This typological study based on data from a parallel text corpus is two-step investigation of selectives (“topic markers”). First, set in 81 languages all continents compiled the basis their occurrence with emphatic personal pronouns contrast constructions. In second step, it explored how this markers used across 19 subordinate clause domains. The results indicate that, despite much crosslinguistic diversity, distribution clauses strongly constrained. Selectives are distributed following tendency scale (no strict hierarchy, but no blatant exceptions): general relative rank highest followed by conditional and temporal concessive purpose ranking lowest. No postposed attract selectives. It further found that tend to occur at end constituent which they have scope over where there minimal risk ambiguity. Despite frequent clauses, not be connectives unless happens grammaticalization source.

Information Structure in Subordinate and Subordinate-Like Clauses
While information structure has traditionally been viewed as a single partition of information within an utterance, there are opposing views that identify multiple such partitions in an utterance. The existence of alternative proposals raises questions about the notion of information structure and also its relation to discourse structure. متن کاملGenitive Subject Licensing in Uyghur Subordinate Clauses
In this paper, we analyze certain embedded clauses in Uyghur, a Turkic language spoken in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. We argue i) that genitive case on the subjects of these clauses is licensed by agreement with a clause-external head, and ii) that these clauses are full CPs. Putting these two claims together, we have evidence that Uyghur exhibits agreement and case-assignme...
متن کاملAspects of the Translation of English Subordinate Clauses into Aspects of the Translation of English Subordinate Clauses into German
While many errors in machine translated texts are due to word sense ambiguity, syntactical transfer still poses problems, too. For a particular type of syntactic structure, namely, subordinate clauses, this paper distinguishes five kinds of translation difficulties: crosslanguage differences, syntactic ambiguity, functional ambiguity, stylistic preferences, and grammatical coverage.
متن کاملLocation Specific Constraints in Matrix and Subordinate Clauses w Jane
Matrix and subordinate clauses can be different. This paper has two goals. One is to set out a general perspective on the differences between matrix and subordinate clauses, based on constraint interaction (Prince and Smolensky 1993, 2004).. The other is to solve an empirical problem with a long history: the fact that inversion of a subject and auxiliary does not occur in subordinate interrogat...
